Moving Checklist

Moving house will never be completely hassle-free, but with a little planning there is a lot you can do to help the day go smoothly.

Lots of our customers use Space Maker while they are moving house, for a number of reasons.

Moving house can be unpredictable - sometimes it turns out the new home isn’t quite ready but the old home still has to be vacated.

While you can often stay with relatives or friends over the moving house period – what about your possessions? Self storage can be the answer to this common moving house problem.

Another scenario is when the people moving house discover their new home doesn’t have room for all of the furniture. With everything going on while moving house, there is little time to sell or dispose of your unwanted possessions, and self storage provides a solution.

Often moving house can involve a major refit of the new place. While you are altering and decorating your new home, it makes sense to put your possessions into storage for protection.

Moving House Checklist

  • Take an inventory of everything before moving house.

  • Buy sturdy storage boxes. Moving house is tough enough without the boxes breaking!

  • Label storage boxes clearly. Moving house can be chaotic, and well-labelled boxes really help.

  • Tell everyone that you are moving house; e.g. family, friends, employer, utilities, doctor, dentist, bank, finance companies, DVLA, subscriptions services and clubs.

  • Inform the electoral services that you are moving house and get the register updated.

  • Tell the Post Office you are moving house and ask them to re-direct your mail.

  • Take the opportunity of moving house to return items borrowed from friends, neighbours and libraries.

  • Reserve your storage unit in advance, so it’s one less thing to do on the day you are moving house.

  • Disassemble furniture the day before you’re moving house.

  • Make an early start. Moving house often takes longer than you think.

  • Consider arranging for someone to look after the children, as moving house can be stressful for them too.

  • Empty bins, lock windows and doors and get ready for an exciting new chapter to begin.

Where are you moving house?
